[Mara]
Mara lets go of the railing and turns to face Christine.  The rage  
was cooling, but still just under the deceptively placid surface.   
"It means that the bitch played us all for fools."  Mara replies.   
She would have to call Danvers.  He should know that Carlton was  
in the city...and Kindred to boot.  "The attack on the office was  
a cover up."

[Christine]
Christine wonders if it's just her booze addled wits but she is  
still groping to understand. However, Mara is tail-lashingly angry  
so Christine is a bit wary of asking any dumb questions.

"I'm trying to get this," she says placatingly. "Camille Carlton  
became a vampire and that had to be covered up? I guess we *were*  
asking a lot of questions about her. Was that it?"

[Mara]
"It wasn't about the questions."  Mara replies.  "It was about the creation.  Among my social circle, you have to have permission from the higher-ups to make another or else.  Whoever made Camille, I'm betting we moved in the same circle, and they didn't bother to ask for permission first."  

[Christine]     
Christine knows that somewhere beneath the headachy fuzz that is  
her current thought process, she should be getting very hot and  
bothered about this revelation. She got shot during the attack Mara  
is talking about. She survived only because Mara had willed it so  
and her impulsive intervention had changed just about everything in  
Christine's life. The blood bond. For the last two years, that has  
been her whole life, pretty much. Until a few days ago, anyhow. Now  
she's not bound anymore. She's in freefall. Oh God. Blood bound was  
simpler and Christine a lot less lonely and scared.

"So, why's she in Gotham, now? Here at this party, too  . . . I  
don't think she was expecting to see me."

[Mara]
"I don't know."  Mara's tone of voice is less brittle and tense as she starts to get a better handle on her emotions.  "I'm sure she's with someone.  She's not the sort that would attend a party alone."
