[Jack]
A broad, lop-sided grin comes over Jack’s face, almost
giddy at the thought of his newly-won freedom. “Let’s
just say that I find myself... unemployed... and I am
not at all unhappy about it. In fact, it’s reason for
celebration. So...my friend, Christine and I decided
to crash this little soiree and help ourselves to free
booze.”

His eyes go a bit wide. “Oh, please don’t rat us out.
I don’t want to get into trouble and... we’re going to
go on a pubcrawl in a few minutes anyway. This was
just the first stop on a night of festivities.”

Jack blearily eyes a tray of champagne-filled goblets
as a waiter hovers nearby. Though he’s very tempted to
continue taking advantage of the non-stop flow of
alcohol, it’s finally getting through to his impaired
brain that it may be wise to start pacing himself.

“Were you invited to this or are you crashing too?”

[John]
"Well, congratulations on that bit of fortunate bad
luck."  He motioned for a waiter and asked that a beer
be brought to him, looking to see if Jack wanted
anything.  When the waiter was gone, he continued.
"As far as crashing the party, I guess that depends on
your point of view.  I had no invite, but no one
stopped me from coming in.  So here I am."

[Jack]
As the waiter pauses to take his order, Jack thinks
about it for a moment, then asks for a glass of ice
water. He seems to be embarrassed for making this
request.

[John]
He smiled and looked around.  "It's fun, watching what
people sometimes think is important. A guilty pleasure
that we all indulge in on occasion, I suspect.  I
would hate to be near when the day comes and their
illusions are shattered."

John found an ash tray and tapped some ash off his
cigar, a seriousness briefly creeping into his face,
and then vanishing again.

[Jack]
Wrinkling up his nose, Jack doesn’t quite grasp what
John is saying, but nods to be agreeable. “I don’t
know what’s important, other than breathing, eating,
sleeping - you know, the basic stuff. The rest is
bonus. Humans don’t seem to know how lucky they are.
There’s a whole lot of bonus.”
