[John]
He smiled and looked around.  "It's fun, watching what
people sometimes think is important. A guilty pleasure
that we all indulge in on occasion, I suspect.  I
would hate to be near when the day comes and their
illusions are shattered."
 
John found an ash tray and tapped some ash off his
cigar, a seriousness briefly creeping into his face,
and then vanishing again.

[Jack]
Wrinkling up his nose, Jack doesn’t quite grasp what
John is saying, but nods to be agreeable.  “I don’t
know what’s important, other than breathing, eating,
sleeping - you know, the basic stuff.  The rest is
bonus.  Humans don’t seem to know how lucky they are. 
There’s a whole lot of bonus.”
 
[John]
John considered Jack's words for a moment, turning to
face the man.  "You sound almost as if your a guilty
outsider looking in on the human race, wishing you
could be one of us.  Why?"

[Jack}
Taking a long drag on his cigarette, Jack looks at
John with an almost mischievous gleam in his eye.

“Oh, no...” He slurs. “I’m as human as anyone. Just
can’t understand why some people take that sort of
simple shit for granted. Or why they don’t make the
most of opportunities. Carpe diem.  That seems a
pretty good rule to live by, don’ cha think?”

He tucks the cigarette between his lips and fumbles
with one of the bandages on his hand. “I dunno. You
seem to be talking about some dark stuff. ‘Shattering
illusions’?” Jack nods toward the rest of the room.
“They’re all enjoying themselves. Seems important
enough to them at the moment - dressing up and
scarfing free food and booze. Maybe tomorrow morning
they’ll all get serious again. Let ‘em have their fun
for now, I say.”

Jack sways a bit. “I sure as hell am. Carpe fuckin’
diem.”

[John]

John nodded as Jack spoke.  He seemed to be studying the man (Perception + Awareness = 5).  "You may have a point.  But I wonder if this party is carpe fuckin diem to them.  They might be taking it as seriously as the problems they'll face tomorrow."
